The Johns Trophy is a National Inter-Counties Competition established by Clara Johns the Founder President of the English Womens Bowling Association. This prestigious annual event is played on a regional basis with the grand finals played at Leamington on August 3rd . On Saturday last Cotswold Bowls Club hosted the regional final between Wiltshire and Somerset, the winners going through to play the winners of the East Section between Hertfordshier and Essex.
Witshire and Somerset are both strong Counties and fielded quality bowlers in what turned out to be a very highly contested match. Wiltshire took an early lead and at the two thirds mark were eight or nine shots ahead. Somerset put in a strong finish across the six rinks to pull back the deficit to one or two shots, and at one point took the lead. It all came down to the last two rinks playing with the scores level. The first of the two rinks to finish went to Wiltshre giving them a one shot advantage. The winners were decided with the last wood of the match when Wiltshire overturned a one shot Somerset lead into a two shot win for Wiltshire. This was a most exciting and absorbing match enjoyed by all those present and a credit to all the players who participated.
